An employer may prefer to hire a certified biller who has received formal education to manage their revenue cycle. And it can help boost your credibility especially without any prior healthcare experience. In this industry, certification holds more weight than a college degree, especially for non-managerial positions.
No! Although billing and coding are related, they are distinct. Coding is a different skill set that involves reading documentation and translating the services and diagnoses into codes. This is not typically a biller's role and the codes will be provided for you. However, it is beneficial for a biller to have a basic understanding of the different code sets and modifier usage, as this helps ensure claims are submitted accurately.
